Emblem of Europe

The varied symbolism associated with the dance Lime Tree makes it a perfect emblem of the changing face of Europe.

Grounded in traditional European festivals and found throughout Europe in a variety of forms, Dance Lime Trees strengthen the feeling of belonging to the European community. Quintessentially European, they can be planted in any village, town, or neighbourhood. As a symbol of rootedness, they reinforce the building of Europe on a spiritual foundation. In 1997 Jacques Santer set out his project “A Soul for an Ethical and Spiritual Europe”, following Jacques Delore’s declaration of 1992, which stated, “If Europe does not acquire a soul, a spirituality and a meaning in the next ten years, our venture will not survive”. This matter is still topical today.
